Many Americans suffer from knee pain resulting from osteoarthritis (OA) or degenerative joint disease (DJD). Geniculate artery embolization (GAE) is an innovative, minimally invasive, outpatient treatment option that provides up to 90% of patients with significant improvement of their knee pain.
For knee pain, there are a variety of potential treatment options include pain medicines, steroid injections, physical therapy, surgery, and Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE). Many patients will initially try physical therapy for knee pain. Due to the risk of opioid dependence and NSAID toxicity with prolonged use, patients generally avoid long-term medication therapy options. Steroid injections can likewise be used for temporary relief. For patients hoping to postpone or avoid major surgery like knee replacement, GAE is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that offers long-term pain relief and minimizes the needs for pain medication or injections.
GAE is a minimally invasive procedure that inhibits blood flow to abnormal and inflamed blood vessels of the knee resulting from osteoarthritis (OA). The inflammation results in pain related to synovial angiogenesis, the formation of new arteries in the lining of the knee. By blocking blood flow, the inflammation is reduced and up to 90% of patients achieve significant improvement in their knee pain.
GAE is a minimally invasive, quick procedure with a short recovery and offering significant pain relief. However, it is important to note that this is a relatively recently developed procedure and the research in this space is still evolving. It is important to discuss all the pros and cons of the procedure with your physician in detail. Contact us and we will be happy to go over this procedure in detail with you.
Florida Interventional Institute is one of the few facilities in Florida providing this minimally invasive therapy option in the outpatient setting.
Geniculate artery embolization is performed at the Florida Interventional Institute as a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure. To perform the procedure, our interventional radiologist, Dr. Prasoon Mohan, MD, will run a small catheter under x-ray guidance (as the patient is under moderate sedation) into the affected geniculate arteries of the knee via a simple needle stick. Then, small particles are released from the catheter into the inflamed capillaries so to create a blockage called an embolization, while still enabling total blood flow to the rest of the knee and lower leg. Upon completion of the procedure, patients are discharged within a few hours, and they begin to feel relief from knee pain over the course of the next few of weeks.

WHAT AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!
Dr Mohan has a great bedside manner and quiet confidence about him that puts you at ease. I first met him when he performed microwave ablation on my husband’s liver as part of his cancer treatment. One year later Dr Mohan did ablation laser therapy on my varicose veins.
Dr. Mohan makes the most complicated and complex surgeries easy and fun for the patient. He is very caring and has impeccable “Bedside Manners” which is most comforting for an afraid patient. Can’t wait to visit him again. Thanks.
Dr. Mohamed Saved my life! The care leading up till I got accepted for my liver transplant was nothing but the best and most professional and at times difficult. Being the cancer had to be controlled and not spread through out it was just that… he controlled it, got rid of it, explained every procedure thoroughly.
