Uterine fibroids affect millions of women and can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure, and anemia. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe, minimally invasive treatment that preserves the uterus, but many women are concerned about pain during recovery. A new randomized clinical trial led by Dr. Mohan published in the premier medical journal JAMA Network Open found that adding a small dose of dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory medication, directly into the uterine arteries during UFE significantly reduced pain during the first four days after the procedure without affecting treatment success or increasing complications.
Can a Simple Medication Make UFE Recovery More Comfortable?

In our randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open, we studied whether delivering a small dose of the anti-inflammatory medication dexamethasone directly into the uterine arteries during UFE could improve pain during recovery.
Women who received this treatment reported significantly less pain during the first four days after UFE without reducing the effectiveness of the procedure or increasing major complications. These findings suggest this simple and inexpensive technique may help make UFE recovery more comfortable for patients.
Why This Research Matters
One of the biggest concerns women have when considering UFE is what recovery will be like. While UFE is highly effective at treating fibroids without surgery, the first few days after the procedure can involve cramping and discomfort.
This study demonstrates that a small change to the procedure may help improve the recovery experience by reducing pain during the most challenging part of healing, allowing patients to recover more comfortably without compromising safety or treatment results.
