Dr. Mohan conducted a double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial (RCT) evaluating a novel technique for reducing pain after uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). RCTs are considered the highest level of evidence in clinical research, highlighting the scientific rigor of this work.
The study investigated the effectiveness of injecting dexamethasone, a potent anti-inflammatory steroid, directly into the uterine artery during UFE. The hypothesis was that targeted intra-arterial delivery would reduce post-procedural inflammation more effectively than traditional IV or oral steroid administration. By delivering the medication directly to the uterus—the site of inflammation— the entire dose reaches the target tissue, resulting in a high local concentration. In contrast, when dexamethasone is given intravenously or orally, the medication is distributed throughout the body, and only a small fraction ultimately reaches the uterus.
The results demonstrated that intra-arterial dexamethasone significantly decreased post-UFE pain compared to placebo. These findings were presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City in 2024.
Dr. Mohan has since incorporated this evidence-based technique into his UFE procedures as a key component of his comprehensive, multimodal post-procedure pain management regimen.

Dr. Mohan conducted the first comprehensive systematic review examining fertility outcomes following uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). This review analyzed data from 21 studies evaluating pregnancy and reproductive outcomes after uterine artery embolization.
The findings showed that pregnancy rates after UFE were comparable to those of the general population when adjusted for age. The review also noted that earlier studies had reported potentially higher risks—such as miscarriage, preterm delivery and placental abnormalities—highlighting the need for continued research to fully understand reproductive outcomes after UFE.
This landmark work was published as a featured article in the field’s premier journal, the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR).

Dr. Mohan conducted a national study evaluating the utilization of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) compared to hysterectomy across the United States. The analysis revealed that UFE remains vastly underutilized, compared to hysterectomies, despite being a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment with well-documented efficacy and faster recovery.
The study also demonstrated that UFE is associated with markedly lower costs and shorter hospital stays compared to hysterectomy. These findings underscore an important gap in access to this effective, less invasive therapy.
The significance of this research was recognized by the Society of Interventional Radiology, which selected it for an official press release. The study received widespread coverage in the medical media and led to an ABC News 10 interview featuring Dr. Mohan.

Dr. Mohan conducted a study evaluating the effectiveness of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) in patients with large fibroids, comparing outcomes to a matched cohort of patients with smaller fibroids. The analysis demonstrated that patients with large fibroids experienced outcomes comparable to those with smaller fibroids following UFE.
The study also noted that improvement in bulk-related symptoms—those caused by the enlarged size of the uterus—was slightly less pronounced in patients with very large fibroids, which is expected given their greater baseline uterine volume. Overall, the findings support UFE as an effective treatment option even for patients with large fibroids. The study was presented at the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy in January 2023 at Miami, FL.
Dr. Mohan has conducted multiple studies focused on improving the MRI-based evaluation of uterine fibroids. His work assessed the usefulness of international fibroid grading systems and identified ways to enhance the interpretation of MRI findings. These contributions have helped refine how fibroids are characterized on imaging, ultimately improving treatment planning and clinical decision-making for patients undergoing fibroid treatment.

WHAT AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!
Dr Mohan has a great bedside manner and quiet confidence about him that puts you at ease. I first met him when he performed microwave ablation on my husband’s liver as part of his cancer treatment. One year later Dr Mohan did ablation laser therapy on my varicose veins.
Dr. Mohan makes the most complicated and complex surgeries easy and fun for the patient. He is very caring and has impeccable “Bedside Manners” which is most comforting for an afraid patient. Can’t wait to visit him again. Thanks.
Dr. Mohamed Saved my life! The care leading up till I got accepted for my liver transplant was nothing but the best and most professional and at times difficult. Being the cancer had to be controlled and not spread through out it was just that… he controlled it, got rid of it, explained every procedure thoroughly.
